The Firefighter Combat Challenge, sponsored by Brookshire's/SuperOne in Tyler, Texas, is an embodiment of the essence of firefighting, an urgent race against time. Time is the mortal enemy of firefighters, since fire doubles in size every 90 seconds. The Challenge is a spirited, friendly competition that demonstrates to the outside world the nature of the job, the levels of fitness required to perform the job and the kind of people who will put themselves in harm's way to protect life and property.

The Challenge has its roots in a university-based research study funded by the U.S. Fire Administration. When Dr. Davis was a faculty member at he University of Maryland, he and his colleagues were approached by members of the fire service with a mandate to design a test that could be used to identify potential applicants. It took a year of research and analysis to design a criterion task test; ultimately, that physical ability test evolved to become "the engine" of the Challenge. The resulting five tasks that comprise the Challenge are highly reminiscent of actual fire-scene activities.

The Challenge attracts hundreds of U.S. and Canadian municipal fire departments each year in approximately 25 locations and is seen by more than 30 million people worldwide. This website is dedicated to support the event held in Tyler, Texas.

Tom Mooney, District Chief of the Tyler Fire Department, earned Texas State Champion in the Chief's category in 2007.

40+ Relay Team finished third in the world and took home the bronze medal. This is a great accomplishment for them. Team members include Don Williams (2001 over 50 individual champion) Brent Hail, Terry Hawkins (2006 State Champion 40+ individual), Glynn Ray and Stuart Weatherford(2004 State Champion 40+ individual).

The open class relay team finished in the top eight in the world. This is a great accomplishment because there are over a 100 teams that come to qualify for the chance to compete in the 64 team tournament. This is the highest finish for a Tyler relay team. Team members include Brandon Davis, Casey Cabaniss, Zach Houston, Joey Hooton and Patrick Mayo.

Terry Hawkins was also honored as member of the "Lion's Den" for his under 2:00 individual time. This is a great honor for any competitor. This honor is similar to The Hall of Fame for other sports.

Don Williams this year competed in the 55+ individual and came home with second place silver medal.
